LANEY COLLEGE ATHLETIC FIELDS AND FIELD HOUSE

The linear massing of the field house is housed under a single, sloping roof which emphasizes the feeling of motion. The two-story structure supports student activities on the lower floor and coaching/team activities on the upper floor. The facility is framed by the new baseball field to the north, football stadium to the east, and new parking area to the west. Exterior decks at the upper floor enable visitors to overlook both fields (another recruiting tool). The exterior roof deck adjacent to the 100-seat team room is also used for special events. Like the roof deck above, the exterior weight yard adjacent to the lower level weight room takes advantage of the temperate climate. Blurring the lines between interior and exterior, the weight yard doubles the area of the weight room, providing additional flexibility to the football team’s training program. The baseball field is oriented to reduce solar glare; the right field corner is 18 feet lower than the adjacent field house, providing an excellent overlook while games are in play. Dugouts and the scorekeeper’s booth reflect the simple form of the field house and are made with materials that are manufactured locally. The project received LEED Gold certification and AIA East Bay Citation Award.
